Uri Zvi Greenberg, a prominent Jewish poet and publicist, was born on September 22, 1896, in Biały Kamień, Galicia (now part of Poland).
As the eldest son of a rabbi, he received a traditional Jewish education.

Military Service and Literary Beginnings
During World War I, Greenberg served in the Austrian army. Witnessing the horrors of the Serbian front, he deserted and returned to his hometown.
His experiences inspired his first collection of Yiddish poems, "In Tsaitns-Roykh" (1919). In 1920, he moved to Warsaw and became a leading fig
